A Great Movie

Thomas and I watched "His Girl Friday" this afternoon with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. It had been a while since I'd seen it, and I'd forgotton how much I love it. It's one of THE best comedies of its time, with fast and furious dialogue. The Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner movie "Switching Channels", a remake of HGF, was good, but I have to say I prefer "His Girl Friday. I wish I could have at some time seen the play "Front Page" that both are based on. Ralph Bellamy and Christopher Reeve both did a great job with the character of Bruce Baldwin.

But in HGF the timing and setting are so brilliant -- the bloodthirsty, anything-for-the-story reporters, the corrupt and bumbling elected officials, and that wonderful character played by Billy Gilbert who saves the day in the end -- "If I told my wife! . . . Whoooo!" And
"His Girl Friday" has to have one of the best comedic lines delivered by a supporting actor -- "When I came to, I was running down 34th Street!" Classic!

I've never seen the entire movie, only clips. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, and it makes me want to see the whole thing!

I don't think I've ever seen it. I love watching old movies though. There's just something about the classics.

You know I did see this movie on AMC a while ago and I can't remember too much about it. I tend to doze off during movies when they are on late. I am going to have to watch it again, you raised my interest now!

One of my favourites Cary Grant was great at making those sparkiling comedies where the lines just fly off the screen.

"His Gal Friday" really is a terrific movie. It's great when films aren't forgotten just because they're old. For "Front Page" you might also enjoy the movie version with Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattheau.

I just read the email "virtues" you sent me. Haaaaaaaa. Indeed. Very cute. I really don't care for movies but my Dad made me watch The Bicycle Thief as a kid, and told me it was a quiet lesson in morality. At the time I didn't get it, watching it again(and again) I did, and now it is a movie I truly love to see-odd for me, esp considering how many times I have seen it already. I think you would enjoy it.

I don't think I've seen that one yet and now I'm looking forward to it! Don't laugh... I have several Christmas movies to watch from the holidays still waiting on me. Wrestling season for Nick has taken up most of my tv time since Thanksgiving. I could use a whole weekend of just tv time.
Hugs,
Lisa
